The Effect That Drinking Water Has On Your Skin

by | Aug 16, 2017

Water is a lifeline to our survival, we all know the importance of hydration but not everyone knows the benefits of water and the effect of water on our skin and bodies.  As your Calgary skin specialists, we want to share with you a few interesting skin facts that will have you chugging down more water!

Optimal Skin Moisture

Water is the key ingredient in maintaining optimal skin moisture, it helps deliver nutrients to the skins cells, replenishes tissue and helps increase elasticity.  This helps plump up the skin avoiding the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  Dehydrated skin makes you look dry and wrinkled.

Water improves your complexion by keeping the skin hydrated giving off a natural glow! Drinking an adequate amount of water each day is more important to your skin than applying your moisturizer since 50-70% of your body mass is made up of water!

You can lock in moisture by using your favourite moisturizer which acts as a physical barrier on your skin.

Water Flushes Out Toxins

Water flushes out toxins from the body and improves digestion reducing the possibility of an acne flair up.  Dehydrated clients tend to see more of an acne flair up due to a heavier concentration of oil on the skin.  It is crucial to have a healthy water to oil balance on the skin but an over production of oil can lead to clogged pores and increased blemishes.

Fights Off Skin Disorders

Water flights off skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis.  People with this condition already lack the proper compounds in their skin to retain water, to prevent excess drying supply your body with an adequate amount of water.

Soothes Sunburns & Damage

Cool water can sooth a bad sunburn or other damage caused to your skin.  It reduces swelling and pulls heat out of the irritated skin. Burns also pull fluid to the surface of the skin and away from the rest of the body which can result in dehydration.  It is super important to rehydrate yourself with water after a burn.

Opens Pores

Steaming or warm water compress on the skin will open the pores to detoxify the skin allowing dirt and clogged pores to be easily cleaned out.  Warm water brings increased circulation and blood flow to the area which promotes healing, which is great for acne clients with a bad outbreak.  After a steam, a splash cool water will close the pores leaving the skin feeling tight.

Hydration Recommendations

Experts suggest we need to drink 8 glasses of water every day and even more when it’s hot.  If you’re a heavy caffeine drinker you need to add one more glass for each caffeinated drink consumed to stay adequately hydrated.  Drink before you get thirsty, once you’ve hit thirst your already dehydrated.  Water is the most important liquid for your body and your appearance!
