What is Hydroquinone?

by | Oct 17, 2018

Hydroquinone is added to skin care products and used to help skin discoloration and lighten those lovely dark yellow-brown patches on your skin caused by too much sun exposure and aging.  Also known as, liver spots, age spots, sun spots, hyperpigmentation, and melasma. Or, as I like to call them “Annoying.”

Once you apply the Hydroquinone cream, it starts to work by blocking the process in your skin that begins to discolor and helps to even out your skin tone.

Hydroquinone Side Effects

First and foremost, follow all directions on the package and instructed by your skin care specialist, however, watch for stinging, mild burning, redness and dryness. Stop using your cream If you notice blistering, skin cracking or worse darkening of the skin and go back to your skin care specialist as soon as possible.

The use of hydroquinone product will make the treated skin more sensitive to sunlight so avoid prolonged sun time and indoor tanning booths. And always wear a physical sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 when going outside.

But remember, if you were prescribed Hydroquinone cream, your specialist thought the benefits of using this cream outweighed the possible side effects as most who use hydroquinone have no side effects at all.

At Revive Laser we highly recommend ZO Skin Health (ZO Medical) Hydroquinone routine to even out your skin tone, treat stubborn melasma and improve the overall quality and appearance of your skin.  Dr. Zein Obagi developed the highly effective 4% Hydroquinone treatment plan. Melamin is responsible for bleaching and correcting, while Melamix lightens and blends leaving your skin flawless.   At Revive, we always offer samples of our medical grade products for our clients to try before committing to a routine.  If your skin tone is uneven, your texture is less than perfect, or you suffer from stubborn melasma, ZO’s hydroquinone skincare routine will not disappoint you!

IPL Photofacials are another effective method to treat sun/age spots with minimal downtime. However if you’re looking for a deeper treatment to reduce the effects of aging, Morpheus8 microneedling may be the way to go. With this treatment the body repairs and rebuilds collagen, leaving the skin smoother and tighter than before treatments began.
