5 Laser Hair Removal Myths — Debunked

We hear these misconceptions every single day. It’s time to set the record straight with the facts you deserve to know.

MYTH #1 – Laser hair removal isn’t safe for darker skin tones

–>FALSE

This is one of the most common misconceptions we encounter. The truth is, safety comes down to the technology being used — not your skin tone. Older or lower-grade lasers could pose risks for deeper skin tones, but modern technology has changed everything.

  • We use the Fotona Nd:YAG laser, which operates at a wavelength that has been proven safe and effective for all skin types, including deeper tones. The Nd:YAG wavelength bypasses the skin’s surface and targets the hair follicle directly, making it a gold-standard option for inclusive treatment.
  • Everyone deserves access to safe, effective hair removal — and with the right machine, they can have it.

MYTH #2 – Laser hair removal works on white & red hair

–>FALSE

We wish this one were true, but science says otherwise. Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin, the pigment that gives hair its colour. The laser energy is attracted to and absorbed by that pigment, which destroys the follicle.

  • White, red, and very light grey hairs contain little to no melanin, which means there’s simply not enough pigment for the laser to lock on to. This also applies to very fine, vellus hair. We always provide an honest consultation so clients know exactly what results to expect for their hair type.

MYTH #3 – Laser hair removal works the same for everyone

–>FALSE

No two clients are the same — and neither are their results. Several key factors influence how your body responds to laser hair removal:

  • Hair colour and coarseness play a huge role — darker, coarser hair typically responds fastest. Skin tone determines which laser settings are safest and most effective. Hormones can stimulate new hair growth, which is why conditions like PCOS may require more sessions. And consistency is everything — missing sessions or spacing them too far apart can reset the hair cycle, directly impacting your outcome.
  • We personalise every treatment plan to your unique biology. Cookie-cutter approaches don’t work here.

MYTH #4 – You only need a few sessions to be completely hair-free

–>FALSE

Here’s the thing: lasers can only target hair that’s in the active growth phase (anagen). At any given moment, only a portion of your hair is in this phase — the rest are resting or shedding and won’t respond to treatment.

  • This is why multiple sessions spaced across several weeks are necessary. Each appointment catches a new batch of follicles entering their active phase. Skipping sessions or stopping early means you’ll miss those cycles and leave active follicles untreated. Most clients see dramatic, long-lasting results — but patience and commitment to the process are essential.

MYTH #5 – Laser hair removal is painful

–>FALSE

This myth keeps so many people from trying something that could genuinely change their lives — and we’re here to debunk it for good. With medical-grade laser technology and advanced cooling systems, the experience is far more comfortable than most people expect.

  • We use the Zimmer -30°C cold air cooling system, which continuously chills the skin before, during, and after each pulse. The result? A treatment that our clients consistently describe as very manageable — many even fall asleep! Any sensation is brief and mild, and varies by area and individual sensitivity.
  • Our clients are always pleasantly surprised. The anticipation is usually worse than the treatment itself.

MYTH #6 – You can treat any area right after sun exposure

–>FALSE — and this one matters!

Sun-exposed or tanned skin — whether from UV rays or self-tanner — contains elevated melanin levels in the surface skin. Because the laser targets melanin, treating a tanned area dramatically increases the risk of burns, blistering, and hyperpigmentation.

  • We always recommend avoiding direct sun exposure and self-tanning products for at least 4–6 weeks before and after each session. If you’re heading into summer or a sunny holiday, it’s worth planning your treatment schedule around it. This isn’t a rule we invented — it’s basic laser physics.

MYTH #7 – Laser hair removal is permanent after a series of sessions

–>PARTIALLY TRUE — here’s the nuance

Laser hair removal is best described as permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal, in every case. A full series of treatments can destroy the majority of active follicles in the treated area, and many clients see near-complete clearance that lasts for years.

  • However, hormonal changes — such as pregnancy, menopause, or conditions like PCOS — can stimulate new follicles that were dormant during your original treatment. This is why occasional maintenance sessions are a normal, healthy part of long-term results, not a sign that your treatment “didn’t work.”
  • Think of it like teeth whitening — a great result you maintain over time, not a one-and-done procedure.

MYTH #8 – You can shave or wax right before your appointment

–>PARTLY FALSE — waxing is a hard no

Shaving before your appointment is actually required — we ask clients to shave the treatment area 24–48 hours prior. This removes the surface hair so the laser energy goes directly to the follicle rather than being wasted on the hair above the skin.

Waxing, threading, and plucking, however, are strictly off-limits for at least 4–6 weeks before treatment. These methods remove the hair root entirely, which is exactly what the laser needs to target. No root = nothing for the laser to destroy = a wasted session

Myth #9 – At-home laser devices give the same results as professional treatment

–>FALSE

At-home IPL and laser devices are intentionally lower-powered for safety reasons — they’re designed for the general public to use unsupervised, so their energy output is a fraction of what a medical-grade clinic machine delivers.

  • Professional systems like the Fotona operate at clinical energy levels, with trained technicians who precisely adjust settings to your skin tone, hair type, and treatment area. The difference in efficacy, speed of results, and long-term reduction is significant. At-home devices can offer light maintenance, but they are not a substitute for a professional course of treatment.
  • Consumer devices and medical-grade lasers are in completely different categories. The gap in results reflects the gap in power and precision.
