If you’re considering RF microneedling for the first time, knowing what to expect can make you feel much more prepared for your appointment.
RF Microneedling is a versatile treatment that can address concerns such as visible signs of aging, scarring, uneven skin tone, and texture. At Revive Laser in Calgary, the process begins before treatment day with an in-depth consultation and continues with specific aftercare and follow-up to track your progress.
Here’s what you can expect before, during, and after your first RF microneedling treatment.
Before RF Microneedling: Your Initial Consultation
Before your first treatment, you’ll meet with a Revive Laser technician for a consultation.
Your technician will review your intake forms and health history to make sure there are no contraindications that would prevent you from receiving the treatment. These may include certain health conditions, illnesses, or medications.
We’ll also discuss your current at-home skincare regimen. Some products or ingredients may need to be discontinued before treatment, including products containing Retinol, Retin-A, or Tretinoin.
Your technician may also make recommendations for your skincare routine to help support your treatment results.
Lifestyle factors may be discussed as well, including:
- Exercise
- Diet
- Alcohol consumption
- Skincare habits
- Other factors that may affect your treatment or recovery
You’ll receive clear instructions about what to do before your appointment and what you’ll need to avoid afterward.
Your technician will also discuss your goals and recommend the number of RF microneedling sessions that may be needed to achieve your desired results.
What Happens During an RF Microneedling Appointment?
Because you’ve already completed your consultation, you’ll arrive for your treatment knowing what to expect and how to prepare.
Before getting started, your technician will likely take photos of your skin so your progress can be documented throughout your treatment plan.
Your skin will then be thoroughly cleansed to remove makeup, SPF, bacteria, and other residue.
Next, a generous layer of numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area and allowed to sit for an appropriate amount of time.
Once the numbing cream is removed, your technician will begin the RF microneedling treatment.
Does RF Microneedling Hurt?
RF microneedling is generally well tolerated by our clients.
You may experience a minor pinching sensation in certain areas during treatment, but the numbing cream helps make the procedure more comfortable. Most clients find the overall treatment tolerable.
Once the treatment is complete, your technician will apply any necessary products and carefully review your aftercare instructions.
At Revive Laser, we send each client home with the necessary aftercare products as well as an aftercare sheet outlining the instructions to follow.
What Should You Expect After RF Microneedling?
Immediately following treatment, your skin may look and feel similar to a mild-to-moderate sunburn.
It’s common for the skin to:
- Appear red
- Feel warm
- Feel tighter than usual
- Experience some temporary sensitivity
Your skin may remain warm for several hours following treatment. Any pinpoint bleeding that occurs during the procedure will be cleaned from your skin before you leave the clinic.
Redness typically improves within 12–48 hours, although recovery can vary from one client to another.
Several days after treatment, your skin may begin to feel dry or start to flake. Using the aftercare products provided by Revive Laser will help support your skin during this stage of recovery.
What Should You Avoid After RF Microneedling?
Mineral SPF may generally be applied the following morning, and most clients are able to return to work.
However, certain activities may need to be temporarily avoided following treatment, including:
- Heavy exercise
- Saunas
- Hot tubs
- Steam rooms
- Significant UV exposure
- Tanning
Your technician will give you specific aftercare instructions based on your treatment and skin.
When Will You See Results From RF Microneedling?
RF microneedling results take time.
You may not notice major changes immediately because your body needs time to heal, remodel the deeper layers of the skin, and produce new collagen.
At Revive Laser, we’ll create a treatment plan based on your individual goals. We’ll also schedule follow-up appointments after treatment to take additional photos, evaluate your skin, and track your progress over time.
