We’ve all used skin toner. But do you every find yourself wondering what it really does? Do you really need all those steps to your skincare routine? Let’s dive into what skin toner does and why you should start using it! The choice to use toner is yours, but as your Calgary skin care specialists we want you to make an educated decision!
What is Toner & how do you use it?
Toner is a liquid that can be used immediately after cleansing your skin. Some toner is sprayed directly onto the face, or alternatively a small amount is added to a cotton pad and then gently rubbed into the skin. The cotton pad should feel damp but not be dripping wet, so that the product isn’t being wasted.
Toner is meant to accomplish a couple things.
Toner removes the last traces of makeup, dirt and oils from your pores that your cleanser didn’t get. This will help with keeping breakouts at bay and also allow your skin care products to penetrate better and work much more effectively.
Toner restores the skin’s natural pH levels, which are somewhat acidic at a pH of 4.5-5.5. Some cleansers and soaps can make skin more alkaline, which strips the skin’s natural ability to provide moisture and protection. Toners are made with a variety of acids, which help bring the skin back to it’s natural, slightly acidic pH level. This will help with anti-aging in the long term!
What kind of toner should You use?
Many drug store brands contain alcohol, which should not be used, as it can be way too drying for skin. Fragrances can also irritate skin and are not recommended.
Those with dry skin should use gentle toners containing extracts such as witch hazel, rosemary, rose water, aloe, chamomile, which will soothe and soften the skin. Use toner only at night to make sure that skin doesn’t get too dry.
Those with oily or breakout prone should look for ingredients like such as fruit acids and hydroxy acids to help with exfoliation and oregano oil and tea tree oil to kill bacteria and provide anti-inflammatory benefits.
There you have it! Toners are a great way to be proactive in preventing signs of aging, and keeping breakouts at bay. Using toner is completely up to you, however as your Calgary skin care specialists we encourage you to use it.
